Perhaps best known as a member of the New Pornographers and Immaculate Machine, Kathryn Calder has just released her highly anticpated first solo project, Are You My Mother. She was in town recently, and took time off of her busy tour schedule to swing by our Vancouver Studios to record a special West Coast edition of Artist Series Podcast. Kathryn Calder, otherwise known as the keyboardist and backup singer from The New Pornographers has released a free mp3 for the track “Arrow” from her debut album Are You My Mother, set for release on August 3. According to the press release the song was recorded in one day and it “captures the dream-like feeling of childhood, but the lyrics are bittersweet, reflecting ‘that inevitable turning point in life when you realize that sometimes you’re on your own to figure it out.’” Currently Calder is touring with the New Pornographers and she’ll be singing lead vocals during their upcoming performance on the Late Show with David Letterman tomorrow night.

Though she’s developed a full career as a member of the New Pornographers and Immaculate Machine, Victoria-based pianist and singer Kathryn Calder had never written and recorded a full album as a solo artist. Recently, she rectified this by setting up a home studio with the Hive’s Colin Stewart and banging out the ten tracks found on her debut solo effort Are You My Mother? According to a press release, this was the first time that Calder was forced to fully realize her songs, as she previously brought half-ideas to practice and let her bands finalize them. As a result, Are You My Mother? is an intimate look at Calder’s self-discovery as she blossoms into a solo artist.
While she was taking the reins, however, the album does feature guest appearances from her New Pornographers band-mates Kurt Dahle, Todd Fancey and Neko Case, as well as members of Ladyhawk and Frog Eyes.
Are You My Mother? will be released by File Under: Music on August 10. For now, album opener “Slip Away” can be downloaded here.
